The short version
The Reed app has no usage analytics, no crash reports and no account. Your voice and your text stay on your Mac. It connects to the internet for two things only, described below.
Who we are
W20 Labs Inc., a Delaware corporation, makes Reed and runs reed.w20.ai. Questions or requests: support@w20.ai, 1007 N Orange St, 4th Floor, Suite #5921, Wilmington, Delaware 19801, United States, or +1 (510) 676-5692.
What the Reed app connects to
Reed connects for two reasons only. When you set it up, it downloads its speech model from Hugging Face. After that, it checks for updates about once a day, and whenever you choose Check for Updates, by fetching a small update feed from Amazon Web Services in the United States. Like any web request, these carry your IP address and standard request details, such as the versions of the software making the request; the update check identifies the Reed and Sparkle versions (Sparkle is the update library). Reed adds nothing about you to them.
What stays on your Mac
Reed keeps three kinds of data on your Mac: the speech model, in ~/Library/Application Support/FluidAudio/Models/; its diagnostic log and any review copies, in ~/Library/Application Support/Reed/; and your preferences, in macOS’s settings for Reed (com.local.reed). The log is designed to record what Reed did, not what you said; entries older than 72 hours are removed when Reed starts, or sooner if the log grows past its size limit. If you turn on local review copies, Reed keeps each dictation’s recording and transcript, readable only by your account and excluded from Time Machine; copies older than 14 days are removed when Reed next starts or saves another copy. You can delete any of it at any time.
If you use Reed 0.2.5 or earlier
Earlier versions had optional usage analytics (Aptabase) and crash reports (Sentry), both sent to services in the EU. In Reed 0.2.5, setup ends with a checkbox that turns both on and starts checked. Reed 0.2.5 also checks reed.w20.ai for feature settings when it starts, its “Report an issue” emails your description and Reed’s log to our support team, and it can show a form for news about a paid tier that is no longer planned. Updating to the current version stops all of this. Crash reports already received are kept for six months; Aptabase keeps analytics under its own terms, and we have not confirmed its retention period.
This website
reed.w20.ai uses Umami Cloud to count page views and a few clicks, such as download clicks. It records the page and referring page, browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language and country. Umami says it uses no cookies for this and does not store visitors’ IP addresses. Our Umami account uses the EU region and keeps analytics for six months. The website does not ask for your email address.
If you contact us
If you email support, we receive your address, your message and anything you attach, and use them to answer you. Our email is hosted by Google Workspace. We review it weekly and delete conversations that ended at least three months earlier, including emptying Trash; we keep no other copies. Bug reports you post on GitHub are public and handled under GitHub’s terms and privacy policy.
Records from Reed’s earlier paid service
Reed no longer has accounts. Records from its earlier account-based service still exist: account and sign-in records, subscription and team records, email addresses given on interest forms, and usage records. We plan to delete them; that has not happened yet, and this page will be updated when it has.
Who Reed is for, and your requests
Reed is intended for adults and professionals, not for children. Email support@w20.ai if you believe a child has given us personal information, or to ask about information we hold about you. Please don’t send identity documents unless we have explained what we need.
